Until July 2017, documenting the seasons of coastal Dorset. I'm a complete amateur so don't trust I'm always right. If ever you see I'm wrong - whether with identifications or in anything else - do say! Meanwhile . . . I've now moved to Halifax in West Yorkshire. Click on the link below to collect the new URL. ANTICIPATING TROUBLE

This is a post left over from when Loose and Leafy was a work of fiction. Later, it evolved into what it is now - a blog about the wild plants of the South Dorset Coast.

To make sense (in so far as there is sense) of these early posts, you may like to take a look at Esther in the Garden.

* * *

Ceres will arrive tomorrow and that spells trouble.

She's a pain.

And the police will want to know where I got her from and I won't know because Mr Johnson won't say - but it's an ethical thing. If I agree to take her now and that leads to all the children coming home that must be good, mustn't it? Except . . . if that 'home' turns out to be my home then it won't be a 'good thing' at all; not for me.

If only they were nice children! There are posters up about them everywhere and they've been on television but although everyone pulls long faces and talks about them in hushed voices you can sense an undercurrent of relief. No-one wants them harmed but no-one wants them here either.

Mr Johnson (the lurking man) says he knows where Robert and Caddis are too but they don't want to come back yet. His wife is looking after Charon separately but this seems to mean separately from him as well as separately from the other children and he's a bit vague about where they might be.

Nancy wants to know when I'm going to show pictures of my garden. I'm not! Definitely not! Not unless people would like to see photos of planks of wood, a wasteland of concrete, acres of gravel and a pile of lumpy shapes which is supposed to pass for a 'rockery' and has plants resembling bright green lolly-pop cones on sticks sticking straight up out of it. And even if they did, I'm not going to put them on my blog! As I say, I don't have a garden. Not what I'd call a garden. Not a garden anyone would want to 'be' in. Esther said it's all my fault for not knowing the difference between a garden designer and a landscape gardener. But I didn't and I'm the one who is paying for it and I wish she hadn't been so self-satisfied about it. Sometimes I'm almost glad she's gone too.

No, I'm not.

ahh...a bad contractor can ruin your day. We got someone to "trim" a tree, and he mutiliated it, lopping off huge, healthy limbs, while managing to trample plants, and leave dead limbs ON the tree. Sigh.

And don't despair, when I married my 'Pup, he'd lived in the house alone (except for various room mates) as a bachelor for 11 years.

Yah, it was bad.

Outside was even worse. The backyard had been pretty much ignored for 2 years (long story) and in Houston, that means it was full of aggressive, quickly growing HUGE weedy plants, volunteer ash trees (that can grow 10 feet in a year), and had various components of an abandoned garden..and a defunct above ground pool.

It took me almost 4 years and hiring a lot of help when I could afford it to beat back the jungle.

And now, I have a relatively "done" garden, needs a clean up that we didn't get to do before it got too hot, but it's liveable and as "done" as any garden is...that's to say...in the midst of continual change.

(sounds like Ceres is going to be a handful!)

sounds like Esther is going to have a lot of explaining to do!

(ps: I love being mentioned in someone's blog...hehehe)
